Active Listening
Great communicators do one thing well – they engage in active listening.
I was reminded of the power of active listening recently with a visit to a physical therapist. Long story short, he was amazing!
He focused on the purpose of the conversation.
He paid attention to my body language.
He clarified and paraphrased information I shared with him.
He was expressive, offering encouragement through verbal and nonverbal cues.
He asked questions.
He didn’t pass judgment.
Nothing’s more important than your good health. Effective communication skills with providers – it’s a two-way street - can make a difference. I walked away from my PT session with informative printed handouts, including graphics, to engage in exercises at home.
